Running Training

Running training is still one of the most popular forms of exercise.

  • Whether you are training for an event, or just looking to get in shape, running can be an excellent way of achieving your fitness goals as it is accessible to almost everyone.

However, although almost everyone can run, there are a few things you need to bear in mind when constructing a training program.
When you are considering the objectives you want to achieve through running training, look at your base fitness level, your age, and how much time you can spend running. If you are new or are returning to running training, it is always a good idea to consult your doctor before embarking on a program.

EQUIPMENT


Running might seem a simple form of exercise without all the technical rigmarole of a sport such as cycling, but there is one piece of equipment that is vital to the success of your running training: your shoes.

  • It is thoroughly recommended that you buy a pair of shoes from a reputable running shop that is equipped to assess your footfall, so that you can get the running shoes most suitable for you.

   
 
 
 
 
   

Whilst most sports shops will stock good running shoes, they will not necessarily have the expertise to assess whether you pronate or otherwise, as well as all the other factors that go into a sound choice of running shoe.

  • The right running shoe will protect your knee alignment and joint health. In the worst case scenario, the wrong shoe can lead to injury.

Although running is not a contact sport, it can be quite hard on the body, especially your knees. The right choice of footwear will help, but also try to run on surfaces that have more “give”, for example, trails. Trails also have the advantage that they tend to be more scenic and fun, as well as being easier on your joints.

TRAINING

The nature of your running program will depend on your personal circumstances and the type of event you want to do. Running events vary in length from around 5 kilometers, right up to a marathon of 26 miles and beyond.
