Swim Training

Swimming training can be highly beneficial for almost anybody, whether you are doing it to improve your overall health, merely to learn to swim, or to be comfortable in the water, or whether you have a specific event in mind. Whatever you decide to do with your swimming, swim training carries with it many advantages and few downsides.

  • It is an excellent form of exercise for anyone of almost any age or level of fitness, as it provides an aerobic workout which can help to improve cardiovascular health and fitness.

It is also a relatively safe form of exercise as there is almost no impact upon the body as your weight is borne by the water. Contrast this with other forms of training, such as running which has relatively high impact upon your body, and can lead to joint strain and injury.

In fact, swimming can be an excellent way of rehabilitating injuries as it is an excellent way of building joint and muscular strength with the minimum of impact. Talk to your doctor or medical practitioner before embarking on any program of rehab.

TRAINING

Depending on your objectives, age, fitness level and experience, you have many different options as to how to carry out swim training.

For the competitive, there are swim sessions catering for every age type of athlete from school age, through to masters swimmers. Pure swim training sessions tend to cater for swimmers who already have some proficiency in the competitive strokes i.e. freestyle, back stroke, breast stroke and butterfly.

   
 
 
 
   

Not all swimmers need to be proficient in all forms of swim stroke. For example, triathletes generally only compete using freestyle. Proficiency in other strokes can be beneficial but is not required, and therefore triathlon swim sessions tend to concentrate heavily on freestyle.

As well as improving your endurance, any swim training program should contain an important element designed to improve your swim technique, so that your stroke can become stronger and more efficient.
