How do I start my beginner triathlete training?

It's good to have a goal about what you want to do, and the first step is deciding on a triathlon event to enter before you start planning your training.

Good events for beginners in Singapore (or nearby) are:  

  • Singapore Sprint Series
• Bintan Triathlon
• Osim Triathlon

Once you have a triathlon event in mind, your first goal is to complete it and enjoy the experience. A first good experience will give you the motivation to pursue your training and set your next goal such as a longer race or a faster time.

HOW CAN TRIBOB HELP ME PREPARE FOR MY FIRST TRIATHLON?

A beginner in triathlon may not have done any sport for a long time or may be very proficient in one or more of the triathlon disciplines. We therefore do not label everyone as a beginner in each sport from the start.

  • Some events will be a simple bike followed by a run (bike/run), but others might be run/bike/run or bike/run/bike. In between run and bike, there will be a transition area where you can rack/unrack your bike, change your clothing and/or footwear, and take on some nutrition.

A common misconception among Triathlon newbies is to think that you need to train in the three disciplines at the same time. The truth is: you don’t. You train separately in swimming, cycling and running, and that the beauty of triathlon – alternating training in the three different disciplines makes your training routine varied and decreases the risk of injuries.

   
 
 
 
 
   
  » We offer beginner sessions in swimming which will help you to get to grips with proper swimming technique and to be comfortable in the water – both pool and open water.
Our swim sessions that cater for beginners are:
Tuesday 20:00 – 21:00

» If you are new to biking, we advise you to start with our monthly bike skills session where you will learn all the skills you need and build some confidence to ride a bike safely on the road.
After one skill session, you can join the Saturday morning session.

» Beginning runners should come along to the Tuesday track session where a coach can help you with running technique tips and information on how to build your running fitness.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO GET STARTED?

Do not worry about equipment to get started. You do not need anything in particular except for your regular swimming gear (swim suit, goggles) and running gear (running shoes, running shorts, singlet or t-shirt). As for cycling, any bike will do to start (including mountain bike). It will always be time to upgrade at a later stage to a proper road bike if you enjoy the sport. Ensure though that you have a helmet (compulsory to join our sessions).

And for all sessions, we strongly recommend that you bring along a water bottle.

  • As a beginner, you will be given every encouragement and all the help that you need by our coaching team to train not only for your first triathlon but to continue training and racing and to embrace the triathlon lifestyle.
